Golden Globes 2012

Such a bland title today. I was pleasantly surprised with last night’s awards. Again, I am not up-to-date with many of most of the movies that were nominated (damn you limited release movies and empty bank account!). So let’s discuss a few thoughts:

– Ricky Gervais was fantastic. Just enough ridicule to make you feel uncomfortable but not embarrassed for him. However, as the night progressed, his jokes just got sloppy.

– The presenters were delightful and had just enough banter. Well done, banter writers.

– The speeches.. were not so great. Almost every acceptance speech was lengthy and boring and wordy and unnecessary. But George Clooney, oh George, he was classy and well spoken and short and charming. Let’s date? (see what I did there? I’m respecting his choice not to marry)

Helen Mirren is still smokin’ hot

– Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie look at each other like there is no one else on the planet. Every time one of them was on stage, the other smiled like they’ve never seen anyone so lovely. True love and adoration do still exist in Hollywood.

– Tina Fey is the funniest person on the planet. Hands down.

– Modern Family should always win. They are a hilarious group of super good looking people.

– Peter Dinklage is a spectacular human being. And everyone should want to be friends with him

– Most everyone looked fantastic:

Go Watch a Movie: Braveheart

Way back in the dark ages when Mel Gibson wasn’t walking the streets of Hollywood like a crazy drunk, he was actually a little decent in movies. Based on a true story, this movie tells the story of Scotland’s freedom from and triumph over Britain. Everything about this film gets me excited. The music, the filming, the writing. It’s all so liberating and motivating. It’s a beautiful story of a man’s love for his wife and nation.

The passion and determination William Wallace (Mel Gibson) has for his country’s people is inspiring and heartbreaking. This movie will bring you to tears I promise you.

In other news, my sincere apologies for no post on the People’s Choice Awards. It sucked so badly that I couldn’t bring myself to talk about it. However, tonight’s event is much larger and I will have plenty to say afterward I’m sure.

Five TV Shows My Broski Thinks You Should Be Watching

January 11, 2012 § 3 Comments

My brother watches a lot of TV. Like if all of his regular television shows aired in the same season he’d be keeping up with about 25 shows. Addiction? Or education? Probably addiction, I’m scheduling an intervention. Nevertheless, he’s led me onto some really stellar shows that I can’t get enough of. Sometimes watching a movie is too much of a commitment and you just need a few episodes to occupy your time. Here’s what I’m obsessed with.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Unfortunately, FNL had its last season in the spring 2011 (or fall 2010 depending on when you watched it). This drama is set in a high school football obsessed town in Texas following the football coach’s family and players. The story line has some of the deepest most meaningful relationships on television. I mean the coach and his wife are literally the greatest television couple in history. Not to mention Kyle Chandler is a total babe. Don’t start watching this series until you have like 3 days free because you won’t be able to stop watching.

PARKS AND RECREATION
Funny. Just funny. A nice 30 minute sitcom you can watch at any time and just laugh for days. Amy Poehler is adorable and Nick Offerman is easily in the top 10 of funniest guys in sitcoms. Ridiculous plots and awkward moments make for the perfect TV show.

BREAKING BAD
I shouldn’t be recommending this show. It’s about cooking meth. But the guy cooking it has really great intentions and just wants financial security for his family. He’s a very loving father and husband. There’s also outrageous drug dealing/smuggling drama and excitement.  A great family show. At least it is in my house.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
This is our generation’s equivalent to Friends.  The characters are endearing and funny. The kind of show that isn’t just hilarious but builds relationships and stories that will have you crying. You should catch up on the previous seasons (on instant Netflix) because this season is outrageous! But really. You should catch up on it.

SHAMELESS
So after you watch the show about cooking meth, you’re going to watch a show about a less fortunate family that does everything but kill people for money and their drunk useless father. The family really lives up to the title of the show. But they love each other and stick up for each other and take care of each other in such a way that makes you want to be a part of the family (but not really because that would be bad). The show is definitely not for the young viewer or anyone under the age of 17. While some of the content may be inappropriate, you just can’t help but adore the characters and emotionally involved in their shameless lives (pun intended).

Go Watch a Movie: LOTR: The Return of the King and more Oscar’s fun

First, to all of you out there making bets that I wouldn’t post on time: hand over the cash, I’m giving you a review!

Second, People’s Choice Awards is on tomorrow night 9pm ET on CBS. Don’t miss it. And after you watch it you’re going to post your thoughts on this blog entry.  Deal? Excellent.

And now, the beginning of the best picture reviews. Beginning with 2003’s winner: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. To my knowledge you have not had the privilege of seeing my dorky side. But after this you’ll be able to see that I’m much cooler than you thought. And by cooler I mean kind of a nerd.

This movie, the only LOTR that won a best picture was fantastic. It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen it so you’ll have to forgive me some of the details. The cinematography and effects in this film are absolutely unreal. Something you can only understand by watching it.  The story line is gripping, emotional, shows incredible camaraderie and heart. In its year, this movie was nominated for 11 awards at the Oscar’s. And won every. single. one. Still don’t want to watch it? Orlando Bloom is a total dreamboat. Yeah I’m not a fan either. But, there’s a plethora of attractive men to look at it. Don’t knock the fantasy genre till you watch it. This is the kind of movie you just can’t hate.

In other 2003 Oscar news, Billy Crystal was hosting for the 8th time, his 9th being this year’s awards. Sophia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford Coppola) became the first American woman to be nominated for directing with Lost in Translation. And Finding Nemo won for Best Animated Feature. Because, well, Pixar kicks ass.

There ya have it, the first edition of our Academy Award reviews. I’ll be tweeting during People’s Choice and blogging on Thursday!

I <3 award season (I swear I’m not 12).

Coming Soon…

One week left of break and I’ve barely posted. Yikes. Sorry about that. And this isn’t a real post either. So, sorry again. However! Things are looking up and I am absolutely, positively posting some exciting things these next few weeks:

Award season is quickly approaching (kinda snuck up on me this year) and I plan to leisurely enjoy them this year. I get to watch The Peoples’ Choice Awards AND The Golden Globes with my pops so I’m thrilled. Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to view many of the films nominated for this year’s prestigious awards. So instead of making the normal predictions, we’re doing something a little different.

To make up for never posting (too little, too late? I can only hope you find it endearing), prior to each award show I will review a best picture winner within the last decade or so. Time to give you guys a little culture! In addition to your cinematic history lesson – I swear it will be much more interesting than that – I will discuss the award show after viewing it. We’ll talk fashion, hosts, presenters, winners, etc. etc.

So please, please, please do me a favor: post a question, thoughts, comments you have on the awards and I will be sure to address each and every one.

That’s it for now, but I give you my sincerest promise that you won’t be able to keep up with the amount of posting I’ll be doing.

This was a tough choice for our Christmas special. Between It’s a Wonderful Life, Charlie Brown Christmas, Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, and White Christmas I just couldn’t decide. But since I have a soft spot for Linus and his adorable speech I went with this clip. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

So the holidays are near, and I’m actually pretty ready for it this year. All of my purchases are made and I only need to wrap two more gifts! Speaking of wrapping… the reason we are here. To show off my artistic gift wrap idea. I am subscribed to both Vanity Fair and Interview magazine, neither of which I like to throw away because I have attachment issues to good art and attractive people. So I hold on to the magazines and pile them up on a creative shelf to make me look more cultured. Do you hate me yet? Yeah me too. This year I decided to “go green” and use those beautiful magazines to cover the boxes I am giving my loved ones this year. The final result?

Fully wrapped with ads and photoshoots and finished with a solid black satin ribbon. There is no way I’m letting anyone open their gifts this year. They’re just too pretty! Such a great idea for anyone looking to wrap a gift but exercise their creative hand as well.

To label each gift, I added the receiver’s celebrity crush and photos that fit their personality. Got a health nut in the fam? Grab Women’s Health or Men’s Fitness and cover the box with photos of bikes and sneakers and apples. When in doubt, grab the nearest magazine and rip out all the ads with pretty colors once they’re all together, it’ll look fantastic. My family loves cinema and fashion and attractive people (you wondered where I got it from, huh?) so the magazines I owned were perfect.

Well now that I’m on break, and my professors have demanded we don’t do any thinking and get drunk all the time (I’m not kidding about that) I’m planning on updating like it’s my job. I will watch movies and trailers and talk about all the awesome things happening in pop culture.

But maybe not till after the holidays… I’m the worst.

I’m so clever with titles, no? No you’re right, I’m really not.
I’m also great at updating. Yeah, I can’t even pretend I’m good at that one.

You’re welcome.
